Can Airvet prescribe medication?
Yes, Airvet now offers prescription consultations included in some Airvet Memberships, for cats and dogs (to see whether Prescription Requests are a feature available for your benefit, please visit your Membership details screen in the app).
Laws for prescriptions vary by state/province and we are only able to provide prescriptions to residents of certain regions at this time, if supported by your membership. For memberships that offer the Prescription Request feature, the states that are currently supported include:
- Alabama
- Arizona
- California
- Florida
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Massachusetts
- New Jersey
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- Virginia
with more regions coming soon!
Even if you’re not in a state/province where we can currently prescribe or the prescription request feature is not part of your membership, our vets will always be able to triage, support, and provide expert guidance and advice for any pet questions or concerns you may have!
*Note: This feature is only available for some Airvet Members. If you have questions about whether this feature is available to you, you can either visit your Membership details screen in the Airvet app or reach out to us at support@airvet.com and we’d be happy to provide more information.
How do I know if I can get a prescription through Airvet in my state/province?
At this time we only support residents in the states listed above for prescription requests, but we are working to support more regions in the future.
In the future, if you’re curious whether your region is supported, simply tap on the Prescription button on the home screen of your app (if available to you); if your region is supported, you can then proceed with your prescription request.
Our program is new, expanding, and ever-changing. Email us with any questions at support@airvet.com.
I’m in a state/province that legally allows for prescriptions via telemedicine. Will I be able to get a prescription through Airvet?
Some states/provinces that allow for prescriptions through veterinary telemedicine may not yet be supported by the Airvet app; however, we’re constantly working to support more regions!
If I’m prescribed medication through Airvet, can it be fulfilled through Airvet or do I have to go to a local pharmacy?
If you're provided with a prescription, it can either be filled through Airvet's online store or through your local brick-and-mortar pharmacy. Unfortunately, some online pharmacies do not accept prescriptions made over telemedicine.
Can I get a refill for an existing prescription through Airvet?
If you live in a region that currently supports the prescription feature, and your membership provides you access to it, you can use it to request a refill for an existing prescription. If doing this, please be aware that when speaking with a vet who didn’t provide the original prescription, it will be treated as a new prescription (rather than a refill) as a new VCPR (veterinary-client-patient-relationship) must be established with the vet providing the prescription, and will be up to the discretion of the vet as to whether it would be appropriate to provide the prescription requested.
In other words, since it will be treated as a new prescription and a new virtual VCPR will need to be established, there is no guarantee that a prescription refill request will be granted. It is ultimately up to the veterinarian’s professional opinion as to whether providing a prescription would be appropriate based on their evaluation of your pet. Some medications require recent in-person tests before they can be refilled, for the safety of the pet.
Before your visit, you will need to request that your in-person veterinary clinic send your pet’s complete medical record, including information regarding the existing prescription and results of any diagnostic tests (such as blood or urine tests) associated with it, to prescriptions@airvet.com.
Can I get a prescription for any species?
At this time prescription requests can only be made for dogs and cats.
What type of medication can be prescribed through Airvet?
There are a variety of medications that our vets can prescribe if you live in a region/have a membership that currently supports the prescription request feature. However, there are also certain types of prescriptions that simply aren’t able to be fulfilled via a telemedicine visit alone and may instead require in-person care.
Some examples of prescriptions that won't be possible to fill via a telemedicine visit alone include controlled drugs (i.e. opiates) and drugs the veterinarian determines are not appropriate for your pet’s condition. Prescriptions that require recent blood or urine tests can not be filled unless the tests have been performed within an appropriate time frame, your pet’s medical record has been provided, and the Airvet veterinarian deems the refill appropriate (i.e. canine heartworm preventive refills, long-term medications that need monitoring of kidney or liver enzymes).
Am I guaranteed to get a prescription if I submit a Prescription Request through the app?
When making a prescription request, you will be connecting with a veterinarian who will conduct a virtual exam of your pet and learn more about the issues they are currently experiencing. From there, they will use their professional veterinary judgment to determine whether prescribing medication would be in your pet’s best interest for their particular situation.
To clarify, simply starting a prescription request is not a guarantee that you will receive a prescription. It is ultimately up to the veterinarian’s professional opinion as to whether providing a prescription would be appropriate based on their evaluation of your pet.
